How to Select a BiPAP masks in India Full-face, Nasal and Nasal Pillow

Bipap Masks in India

BiPAP therapy has been recommended by your doctor. The machine is arranged. However, this is the thing that most patients fail to understand until their first night the mask is much more important than the machine.
The improper mask is associated with leaks of air, skin marks, and sleep disruption. It happens to be the number one cause of patients abandoning BiPAP treatment during the initial few weeks. The correct mask is such that the therapy is barely noticed at all one puts it on, sleeps, and wakes up feeling better.
This guide describes the three kinds of BiPAP masks in India that are in use in India and the process of selecting the correct mask.

One Rule Prior to Your Decision – Wear a Vented Mask

A vented mask is a mask designed with small holes in it which allows the exhaled air to escape. It is necessary to this home BiPAP machines with single tube usage. When you wear a non-vented mask (a hospital ventilator mask), recirculating CO 2 enters the mask. This is dangerous.
In the event that the mask is not properly vented, our technician will make sure that it is properly vented when BreatheNest delivers your BiPAP. But this is better known than not.

The 3 Types of BiPAP Masks in India

1. Full Face Mask (Oronasal Mask)

Covers: Both nose and mouth

This is a mask that is most widely prescribed in BiPAP therapy in India. At higher air pressures like in BiPAP compared to CPAP, a nasal-only mask will start leaking as soon as you open your mouth when you are asleep. It does not present this issue because a complete face mask is worn coloring nose and mouth.

Choose this if:

  • You hold your breath with your mouth when you sleep.
  • Your doctor has improved pressure settings.
  • Naresal masks make you wake up with a dry mouth.
  • You have put on a nasal mask and it leaked.

The majority of the patients adapt in 3-5 nights. The new masks of ResMed and Oxymed weigh significantly less than the old models – the claustrophobic sensation most people dread does not long outlast the initial few nights.

2. Nasal Mask

Covers: Nose only
Lighter and smaller than a full face mask. It leaves the mouth completely free and just covers the nose. This is more comfortable to both side sleepers and active sleepers.

Choose this if:

You breathe; and when asleep only on your nose.
Your pressure is quite low as per prescription.
You move around a lot at night
Whole face masks are too cumbersome.

The major weakness: when you open your mouth when asleep, the air escapes and the therapy is ineffective. This can be addressed by a chin strap that is worn with a nasal mask in most instances.

3. Nasal Pillow Mask

Covers: Nostrils only
The smallest option. There are two soft cushions at the door of the nostrils – there is nothing to cover the nose or face. This is popular with patients having beards, claustrophobic patients, and patients wearing glasses at night.

Choose this if:

You have got hair on your face, that will not give a good seal with other masks.
You have low pressure settings.
You wish you could have minimal contact on your face.

Critical:

Nasal pillow masks are not usually the first option of BiPAP. The small cushions might not provide a reliable seal at the higher pressures that BiPAP normally operates at. BreatheNest technician will inform you whether your prescription is fitting or not.

How to Find Out whether your mask fits or not

A well-fitted mask will:

  • Close the straps of the headgear without tightening.
  • Fail to leave deep red marks when removed.
  • Does not hiss loudly during therapy.
  • Feel free enough to fall asleep in the first week.

In case you have spots of red, this means that your mask is too tight. When the machine warns you that there is a leak or air blowing around your eyes, then the mask is not operating correctly. Both can be fixed – mostly through changing the fit, or by changing the size.

BreatheNest is also offering masks of various sizes provided by ResMed, Yuwell, and Oxymed. In case your first mask is not working, refer to us and we will fix it.
