What is a CPAP/Automatic CPAP Machine?
A CPAP ( Positive Airway Pressure ) machine is a medical device which is mainly used for treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
What are the Types of CPAP Machines?
There are generally two types of CPAP machines:
1. Manual CPAP
This type of device deliver a fixed pressure through out the night. This pressure is identified during pressure titration procedure.
2. Automatic CPAP (Auto CPAP)
This is mostly used device which is automatic and this adjusts the pressure according to different pressure needs during the sleep
What are different components of CPAP machine ?
Different companies may give different standard accessories or it may differ based on models as well. But important components are Main Machine , Humidifier , Tubing , Power Adapter , Carry Bag.
How to Use a CPAP/Automatic CPAP Machine?
CPAP/Automatic CPAP machine should be used with a vented mask. Patient will have to wear the mask and sleep , CPAP machine will sense the blockage in upper airway and increase air pressure thru mask.
How Does a CPAP/Automatic CPAP Machine Work?
CPAP/Automatic CPAP machine helps to clear the blockage in upper airway during sleep.
CPAP machine has sensors which continuously sense the degree of obstruction and calibrate the pressure which opens the airway. This helps for a continuous sleep and patient can feel the benefits of therapy.
What are the Features to Look for in an Automatic CPAP/CPAP Machine?
Any CPAP/Auto CPAP machine comes with two main types of features:
1. Therapeutic Features
This is the main and important technology of a CPAP machine. This is mainly the ability to provide the optimum air pressure to open the airways during sleep. Better the technology , Better the performance. Key therapeutic features are –
Modes : This is the most important setting which decides the therapy . different modes are APAP, Autoset , CPAP, Autoset for her , Vauto etc.
Pressure Range : This defines the pressure range of any device which the CPAP can deliver. This range can be 4-20cm H2O or 4-25cm H2O based on the model.
2. Comfort Features
Only Therapeutic feature can’t help a patient to get comfortable on a CPAP/Auto CPAP machine. Comfort feature plays a very important role too.
EPR (expiratory pressure relief) : This feature helps to provide a pressure relief during exhalation so that patient can exhale well .There can be different levels of EPR i.e. 1,2 3.
If we set EPR as 1 then device will reduce pressure by 1 unit during exhalation. This can be set full time or during initial phase of sleep.
Ramp Time : This helps for slow pressure rise during initial stages of sleep so that patient adapts the pressure delivery comfortably. Ramp time can be set manual or automatic based on the models. Generally it is 0-45 minutes.
Humidification system (Automatic/Manual) : A CPAP/Automatic CPAP delivers air with a pressure , this may lead to dryness in throat that’s why Humidification becomes an important feature. Patient will have to put normal water in humidifier and attach to device. CPAP will deliver humidified air then.
Can a CPAP/Auto CPAP help to treat Central Sleep Apnea ?
Yes , Generally in Central Sleep Apnea cases Manual CPAP is used at a fixed pressure however nowadays advanced Automatic CPAP devices are also equipped to sense and support in CSA. In some cases a BiPAP/Bilevel is also used to manage CSA .
A dedicated device – Adaptive Servo Ventilation is also available for severe Central Sleep Apnea cases. If you have Central Sleep Apnea then you should consult with an specialist before making a treatment choice.

Is there a dedicated CPAP/Auto CPAP for Females/Women ?
Yes , there is an special device available for female patients because Male and Female have different anatomical body structures. When we use a normal CPAP then female patient may have difficulty to get adjust to device. A dedicated CPAP/Auto CPAP machine is designed with a different algorithm which can address the problem in females/Women.
You can rent a CPAP/Automatic CPAP machine to get comfortable on the therapy initially. An expert service provider can fix the settings in CPAP machine and may try different combinations to fix any comfort issue in initial 1-3 days.
